Release Managers for PHP 8.1

This is your early, advance warning that RM selection for the PHP 8.1
branch will be coming up in April.  Please start thinking about whether or
not you would like to put your hat in the ring. Feel free to volunteer now,
or any time over the coming weeks.  Additional announcements will be
forthcoming as we approach the selection date.  On April 12th
(provisional), Gabriel or I will announce the list of candidates and, if
more than two candidates have volunteered, open a vote.

Notably, at least one of the volunteers must be a "veteran" release manager
meaning they have participated in at least one release of PHP in the past.
The other may be an additional veteran, or more ideally, someone new to the
RM role (in order to increase our supply of veteran RMs).  Regardless of
who is participating, you'll have access to all active release managers to
help get you up and running.

Hi there,

I'd like to volunteer for this RM selection. I've been around for awhile,
and I want to help the release process. I'll be waiting for the next
instructions.

A gentle reminder to submit yourselves for the PHP 8.1 Release Manager
job.  It really takes nothing more than a little bit of time.

We've got two "newbie" volunteers already, but we should ideally have a
veteral available.  So I'm especially calling for some old timers to step
up and teach the kids some new tricks.

By the way, it seems like we have newbies willing to do this every
time we ask, but finding veterans is a bit harder. Maybe we should
take 2 newbies at a time with 1 veteran to increase the size of the
veteran pipeline?

To add to Levi's comment,

I'd love to put my hat in the ring, although it will be my first time, but
like stated, there are no spots
available anymore. However, I wouldn't mind observing the process to at
least get some experience
for being a release manager in the future.

It's not first-come-first-served, we're calling for volunteers and will
have a vote in mid-April (see initial post from me).  Though attention to
detail in written instructions is a plus *wink* ;)

More of an optional thing.  All volunteers are, by nature, already on the
mailing list and should feel entirely free to send any introduction they'd
like at any time.

Amazing! Just one remark, my name is spelled wrong ;) Its "Smits", not

Whoopsie.  Fixed.  Feel free to change anything on the line referencing
you.  Link to your activity on the project, a statement, etc... Rest of the
document should be Gabriel or I only until the RM selection is done, but
that line is you and yours.

I think that's a great idea, but I think the right way to decide is to
leave it to the veteran who does volunteer for 8.1 to make that call (since
they'll be the one mentoring twice as many newbies).

If they were open to it, it might be advantageous for veterans to make
some YouTube videos as they're going through the processes. That way
infinite people can watch it actually being done for real and learn the
processes well in advance without having to explain to each person one
by one many of the nuances.

You mean a veteran RM, not a veteran participant of this ML, right?

That means it wouldn't help suggesting myself as a RM candidate, however I
would be more than pleased to volunteer in such a role.

Correct.  Though I should also note that for the 7.2 release, neither Remi
nor I had experience.  So there is precedent for two newbies.  It helped
that Remi and I were both old timers and Remi had experience building the
release matrix already.

I went ahead and added you just now, but for future reference you can make
changes to the line containing your name at any time (remove yourself, add
links to a statement about why you're awesome, etc...)

Wow! I’m excited to see all the new folks interested in volunteering as
an RM. I think that’s a pretty good indication of the health of our
community. :-)

I’ll also toss my hat into the ring for consideration as one of the
newbie 8.1 RMs.

I’ve been building PHP applications for over 20 years, and I’ve been
involved with the community in one form or another for about 17 years.
I’ve written for *php[architect]* and *International PHP Magazine*
(when it was still around), and I co-authored a book with Davey Shafik,
of which I’m currently working (slowly) on a 4th edition, updated for
PHP 8.0 (and maybe 8.1, depending on timing).

When conferences were still a thing, I spoke at many, and I ran a PHP
Community Conference in 2011 in Nashville, TN, US. I’m the author and
maintainer of a number of Composer packages, including ramsey/uuid,
league/oauth2-client, ramsey/composer-repl, and others, and I’ve made a
few small contributions to PHP core over the years.

I’m currently a co-organizer of the Nashville PHP user group and I
helped launch the Atlanta PHP user group over 15 years ago.

I say all this to say that PHP is really important to me, and I would
very much like an opportunity to give back with a material impact on
the core. Furthermore, I want to help the next generation of PHP RMs
and core developers by mentoring and training them, once I’ve learned
the ropes.

Thank you for considering me for the role of RM, and best of luck to all
the other volunteers!

I don't have much experience with php-src it self, but i have been
