Hi! It does slows down new mirror setups, cvs checkouts, cvs updates during DST changes, etc to have those files here. They are even not linked for download... I could not agree more! Let's clean up that distributions directory and maybe only keep the latest two 4.x releases and the latest one 3.x release. So, in this case that would be: php-4.3.1 php-4.3.0 php-3.0.18 Also, do we need both .gz and .bz2 versions releases? I think we could decide on one. As for what to do with the older stuff ... I know someone had started a PHP museum with all the older releases back to PHP 1.x I think. Hopefully bandwidth isn't an issue for that person, but if it is, is there any reason we couldn't start a sourceforge project called "PHP Museum" or something, and store all the old releases and patches there? Well, the bz2 version for the latest PHP is approx. 1MB smaller then the gz version. I guess developers who download PHP source have bz2 on their machines. Or is there any linux/unix without bz2 support? Or do we assume that guys on Windows are unable to unbzip2 the download [also noting that the docs are only provided in bz2 now!].

It was Mark AFAIK, and I don't think he has bandwidth problems. There is probably not too much traffic there. The site is also linked from the downloads page. Goba

My Mac and Windows copies of Stuffit Expander handle .bz2 files. WinZip doesn't. And there are lots of bzip apps for Windows.

The lack of traffic may be because the "recent" downloads are available from all the mirrors. I'm just wondering if we take them off the mirrors, what will the traffic be? But you are probably right ... I imagine that most of the downloads are for the most recent versions. If we move everything like I suggested off of the mirrors and into the museum, Mark's probably not going to notice any traffic difference. - Colin

Winrar works with bz2, not very well... but it works I think we need a .zip for windows and a .gz and/or .bz2 for Linux If a windows newbie goes to the download page and sees only a .bz2 available, he'll get extremely confused :) The .zip is sort of mandatory, IMO :)

I would be very against removing .gz versions from php.net, bz2 support on windows is poor at best, I already have winzip and winrar on my computer and I don't really want another dearchiver, .gz is a common format for anyone using linux stuff on windows and they can deal with it, bz2 isnt really that common (most things are available in .tgz and .bz2 or just .tgz) and it would mean A LOT of people having to go find more archivers... its only a few megs in the CVS so just leave it there... it does no harm. - James

We need both, both GZip and BZip. See the discussions on the documentation list which are about the same topic.

Okay, so we keep the gzip and bzip versions of the release, plus the Windows version. Still, are we cool with dropping all but the last two releases from the mirrors? - Colin

I would keep 4.2.3 and ditch 4.3.0. 4.2.3 is still in use a lot, and 4.3.0 has a security hole anyway (the only difference between 4.3.0 and 4.3.1 is that hole). Derick

While it is true that I have no bandwidth problems, I wouldn't say there was a lack of traffic on 'The PHP Museum' site. In the past 10 months there was 636 GB worth of downloads through http, and probably a lot of through ftp which I don't make statistics on. Edin
