I've placed a request with WinZip to support BZ2, they said they would send it to the developers so it will probably never happen but one could wish. A .gz file as well as a .bz2 file would work, WinZip supports gzip well. Most users I know will not go looking for a program to decompress a file assuming they even know how to do that. Winrar works with bz2, not very well... but it works I think we need a .zip for windows and a .gz and/or .bz2 for Linux If a windows newbie goes to the download page and sees only a .bz2 available, he'll get extremely confused :) The .zip is sort of mandatory, IMO :)

Why the windows ppl will need the bz2 while only the sources are bz2-ed. How many are the ppl out there who have Visual C and want to compile PHP? So bz2 for sources, since bz2 can be decompressed on all linuxes and probably most unices. zip for the windows binary distribution. John, I asked how many are the ppl who do the same? bzip2 (or bunzip2) for windows are 50k each (compiled for MS CRT, so need for cygwin). erm, mscrt is not the same as cygwin runtime..

Correcting myself, bzip2 for windows is 50k and is not related to cygwin. It is linked to MS CRT. Same as (cygwin notwithstanding). Anyone with winzip can open tar.gz's, which take up much less space than zip files.. but on the other hand, win32 users are just as likely to identify 'their' download by the .zip file extension if it's not otherwise marked. PHP is often the first introduction a windows user has to opensource projects, or indeed to src files. It's worth taking some time to think this through and not make it difficult for people to learn how software works, imho. (e.g. we could be clear about labelling a download as win32-friendly but make it tar.gz if space is an issue).
